I know some cruise lines have decided not to call there anymore, especially after a Canadian man was shot in the crossfire of a drug gang shooting on the street as he returned from the supermarket to his condo (one drug gang started shooting at another gang member who was on a motorbike, so they sprayed bullets all over the street!).
Apart from that it's hard to find an incident where tourists have been deliberately (or accidentally) targeted in Mazatlan. There is a terrible drug war going on in Mexico, but it's not happening everywhere - just in a few cities - and Mazatlan isn't usually one of them.

Mazatlan is as deep in the middle of the drug wars in Mexico as any other place there, save for the border cities. There have been a fair number of drug related murders there over the last couple years. Fortunately (and mysteriously), tourists are usually spared having to experience this side of Mexico while there. Mazatlan is a beautiful, quieter Mexican beach city that is very popular amongst the nationals. I would still go there but caution is advised. over 9 years ago
