Nina, no need to worry about all the narco-crime violence you're read about, it doesn't happen in the tourist areas of Cancun. The Mexican government is pointing out that all the drug crime is happening in just 80 of the 2500 municipalities of Mexico, and particularly in 3 or 4 northern border cities.... many miles from Cancun.
Cancun city has the usual crime problems of any moderate sized city, so stick to the resort area.
On the resorts.... petty crime is pretty low, but keep your valuables secure, don't leave your camera lying on the beach while you swim. The biggest threat to your safety is either yourself or some other tourist who may have done a bit too much tequila and let their common sense go on vacation too.
About 9 million international visitors go to the Cancun area each year - not one of them has been murdered by drugs gangs.
It's a while different story if you try to buy, sell or transport drugs - so don't even think about that.

Nina, I actually live in Cancun and have for the last 6 months. I look like a tourist and I go all over Cancun alone without any problems. I would recommend you go out with a buddy and avoid going downtown at night, but other than that you should be fine. Just be smart. The weather is HOT and sunny with random spats of rain!!
For Resorts, I would recommend the Gran Melia, Great Parnassus, any of the Palaces, and if you are looking for a little cheaper I would go with the GR or Royal Solaris hotels. Check out www.cancun.com. They tend to have great deals on hotels.
Also, I have a company called Travelclutter, which is like Groupon for vacationers to Cancun. I am finishing up a blog post that details how to use the Cancun public transportation without spending all your of money. It's not up yet, so here's the link http://bit.ly/oVObfL. Have a great trip.... Cancun is Awesome!!! over 7 years agoAnswered by Dustin via WorldNomads.com
