How is security/safety in Mazatlan? I want to go there in October with my husband and three older kids.
In January a Canadian 'snowbird' walking from his condo to the mall was shot and injured in the crossfire when a couple of rival gang members opened fire on each other.
There are some 7000 'snowbirds' in Mazatlan - Mike Di Lorenzo is the only one to be hurt in this way, and even he says he'll return as soon as possible because "it could happen anywhere". Well, maybe not, because there's a terrible drug war going on in Mexico. But, if you're not involved in the drug trade in any way you'd have to be as unlucky as Mike to be affected.
There's no doubt Mexico CAN be a dangerous place, and you need to takle special care, but so far tourists are not being deliberately targeted in the drug war.
Here're a couple of other answers on similar topics, and an article from our safety hub at World Nomads.
Hope that helps you make up your mind. over 9 years ago
I was there in July and had absolutley no issues. I rode busses and even walked the streets alone and never had any issues. It is just as safe as anyother big city in the US. It has good parts and bad parts, stay near the tourist zones and you will have a blast. over 9 years agoAnswered by Greg via Travellr.com
