Our family will be driving on a truck camper from the US to Argentina starting this fall. What is the safest place to cross into Mexico and then best way to Mexico city? I am considering crossing at Laredo/Nuevo Laredo and then drive south through San Luis Potosi, Mexico City, etc. I am mostly worried about the northern states of Mexico. Any advice on a safe route?

It's generally within 20 to 50 miles of the border that there's potential trouble, so gas up and keep going for a while.
