while perhaps it is easy to read media reports and be alarmed, travelling through Mexico alone, particularly as a female means you should at least be cautious.

Don't accept offers of drinks from strangers as we are aware of incidents of drink spiking that then have further consequences.

Also, while the Yukatan peninsular is a wonderful place to explore, having been there myself and got stuck in a town at the end of a road late at night, with no buses out until the morning, I'd suggest you make sure you have a mobile with you so at least someone at home knows where you are if you do get stuck somewhere.

Hope this helps. over 5 years ago

I travelled around this area for about 4 month...especially Yucatan is one of the most peaceful places I've ever been to. I ALWAYS moved by hitchhiking and several times I slept at peoples houses who I had just met. I never got any problems... Highly recomendable and very safe place :)
Don't miss out the Cenotes!! Try to find non touristic ones...these places are absolutely unique! about 5 years ago
