If you're looking to visit cities/urban areas, avoid border cities, especially Ciudad Juarez and Matamoros. Cities in the interior should be more or less okay. If you're looking to hike the Mexican wilderness, tread VERY carefully. Check with international backpacking organizations about which parts of rural Mexico are okay and which are no-go zones. over 7 years ago

Depends a lot on where you're going. A first tip would be to carefully choose your destinations. Pick popular tourist areas, where it's common for hosts to speak English and accomodate tourists. Any beach location will do, and most big cities and smaller traditional towns have nice hostels. San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato are good choices, for a real MEXICAN experience, so are Oaxaca and Puebla. If you're interested in eco-tourism try Chiapas or Monterrey. If you prefer cosmopolitan life, then Mexico City or Guadalajara. over 7 years ago
