Does anyone have recent experience? Everywhere official online say you need a passport, but I've heard people say just a state ID is ok.

Oficially yes, but if you do not have a passport, there's a special line for people "without documents" (meaning without passports) at the immigration checkpoint by the time you return to the us. This line will be longer ard you'll have to answer a bunch of questions to prove your citizenship, but eventually they let you in, no big deal. Just carry with you your original divers license and if poaaible, a birth certificate. Have fun in TJ, I recommend the wine valleys in ensenada, the hong kong nightclub, buying cheap traditional artwork, or just enjoying authentic mexican food almost 8 years ago

The US rules put into place as a result of 9/11 are that you DO need your passport. You MIGHT be able to use a non documented line getting out of the US but then best of luck getting back in. Personally I would not even try. almost 8 years ago

I was just there, and like an idiot I entered Tijuana on a whim without a passport. They let me through without too much trouble, but did advise me that my passport is required.

This is one man's experience, for what it's worth. almost 6 years ago
