The drug related violence in Mexico is almost entirely confined to drug gangs members killing other drug gang members, or police, law enforcement officers, city officials and a few journalists.
It's true a few people have been killed or injured in the cross-fire, but with one or two exceptions none of them have been tourists.
As far as other crime goes, most resorts have a petty crime problem (same as anywhere else in the world). Nearby Veracruz city has a reputation for some violent crime, but then it is the poorest region of Mexico and desperate people do desperate things. Unless a local has specific information - which I'd love to hear - stick to the resort/retirement region and you should be fine. over 6 years ago

I am now 9 years in Catemaco, and consider it to be as safe as any Mexican town. Traveling here from any direction is equally as safe. I would be more worried about road conditions than crime, which statistically affects almost no tourists and even less, foreign visitors.

It is important to consider what Ask Phil mentions, it is really sad to see people talking about how dangerous it is, when actually the danger is not greater than any accident you cold have anywhere else, the only big issue with the crime rates in Mexico are around people who are INVOLVED in the drug business, not innocent tourists. Yes, there are burglaries like everywhere else, but nothing extraordinary and life threatening. over 5 years ago
