I will be diving out of Semporna in Malaysia next week, but I saw there was a travel advisory about kidnapping in that exact region. Is it a bad idea to go?

    There's evidence the pirates from Sulu (Southern Philippines) are planning on more kidnappings of westerners.
    An American was murdered and his wife kidnaped on Sipadan island last month.
    The dive site you're going to better have really good security. You might want to ring them and ask them about what extra precautions they're taking.
    Governments don't issue these warnings lightly.

    I have just read that there has been some new kidnappings in April and May 2014 in the region. I am going to Borneo soon but have decided NOT to go to east Sabah.
    There are other places to go snorkelling without the risk of being kidnapped or murdered... about 4 years ago
