Laos and ATMs in vientiane?

almost 12 years ago about Vientiane, Laos

Web info suggests that Lao is moving from zero ATMs a year or so ago, to now having quite a few. Are ATMs a viable option for VISA (plus) cards rather than taking wads of US dollars?

I am currently in Vietviane and there are a number of ATMs (including an ANZ one) that happily let me withdraw cash from my Mastercard. I can't verify that Visa works (I'll try to find out and let you know).

The limits seem to be anywhere from 500,000 kip to 2,000,000 kip which is plenty for a few days.

They also accept Thai Baht, which is good if you've come from Thailand and want to spend your last notes of Baht. almost 12 years ago

I just checked the BCEL Bank ATM and they accept Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, Cirrus and Diners. Hope that helps! almost 12 years ago

As of November 2008 there was one ATM in Luang Prabang. I'm sure there are more further south - haven't been there for a few years, but depending on where you go I'm not sure I'd rely on it. We took traveller's cheques, which aren't as convenient admittedly, but on the plus side you can change them all over the place.

I guess that's a tentative yes, there are ATMs in the more heavily touristed places, but don't rely on them to be everywhere. almost 12 years ago

I was in Laos in April/May 2008 with a Visa card, and there were plenty of ATMs in Vientiane, quite a few I can remember in Luang Prabang, and I'm pretty sure there was at least one in Luang Nam Tha (small town in the north).
I dare say more have cropped up since then! almost 12 years ago

There are three in Luang Prabang, and one of these is open 24 hours. Maximum withdrawal per transaction is 700,000 kip. almost 12 years ago

There's also a BCEL ATM in Vang Vieng with a withdrawal limit of 700,000 kip - enough to make your wallet bulge and feel very rich :) It's open 24 hours but frequently runs out of cash, so get in early. It takes Visa and Mastercard. If you continue down the rod that the ATM is on (towards the river) there's also a Guesthouse that allows you to use AMEX but they will only give you USD. almost 11 years ago

Luang Prabang has numerous ATMs...they are, however, temperamental ...the one at the airport rejected my bank card and credit card, then I got into the town centre, and it took three thrives at three different ATMs until I was able to withdraw using my bank card. So, be patient...it will work and you needn't go to a money exchange where e rates are high. almost 9 years ago
