I've been in the north of Laos (Vientienne, Vang Vieng, Luarang Parabang) but have heard great things about the south of the country. Is it worth a trip, and what could I see? Thanks!
Yes to North - that is the compulsory part of Laos; down south even if you are not heading to Cambodia is definitely worth while. The 4000 islands area has great spots to hang out, Don Det is described as bliss. You will become aware of how l o n g Laos is when heading there by road. You can flick back into Thailand at two places down south so you don't have to double back and, you are heading for Cambodia it just makes sense. about 9 years ago
Yes, definitely head south. As Gerald mentioned ... the islands are great, and Don Det is a piece of heaven to sit in a hammock on the water. Cheap accommodation all throughout Southern Laos as well. Definitely make time to check out the Bolavan Plateau! Tad Lo and surrounding areas are even more remote than small villages up north. Rent a motorbike/bicycle and explore waterfalls, nature and beauty all over Southern Laos! ( A good stop for traveling from the north is a stop over in Savannaket to check out the cool old shops lining the streets. You'll be lucky to run into any other tourists there! Very quiet!) about 9 years ago
