To travel in a Group or alone yourself is a question which is answered based on the individuals own need regarding their own security concern. As there is not any such law in Laos which bound or order you to travel either in a group or any single one. So you are free to travel in a group or single as you desire. It's theoretical but practically since Laos has underdeveloped country status, it might be some unwanted activities with someone who is going to travel alone. Though that kind of incident might occur with a group of people too, but normally a group of people is less prone to such incidents so it is advisable to go within a group but not too necessary at all. You may go alone too specially you are a male and much aware about the livelihood of the locals of the country. Laos can absolutely be done on your own; we just had a week there as a family, no trouble at all. Just get prepared for visas and beaurocracy which are never that straightforward with old fashioned communist states, but the people are lovely, the food is delicious, and the country amazing (just avoid backpacker holes like vang vieng. Shudder.) over 4 years ago
