Mmmm ... huge cites like these really aren't great for children. However, if you get out there are some fantastic day or overnight trips.

From Tokyo head past Yokohama to Kamakura, or try the Onsen on the Izu peninsula.

From Osaka head to Kyoto or Nara which are both more accessible to a 6 yr old.

We just returned from an amazing 3 week trip around Japan http://www.flickr.com/photos/simonmonk/sets/72157626899178429/with/5848789132/

How long are you planning to be there? almost 7 years ago

I agree with Original Nomad, Kyoto is amazing especially if you like temples. Another great place is Miyajima, it has a beautiful torii gate and amazing maple cookies in the shop and is a good place for a day trip almost 7 years ago

Take your son to a "100 yen" shop. They are a world of fun and discovery for kids. Happy trails! almost 7 years ago

Tokyo and Osaka are will probably very overwhelming for a 6 year old, and a huge culture shock. I'd recommend going to a less crowded place such as Kyoto or Nara, which are both easily accessible from Osaka if you want to do a day trip. over 6 years ago
