I have a Biz trip coming up in the next 2-5 weeks to Tokyo and I want to bring my 15 year old daughter who loves Japanese culture. Are there any tips I should know about?

Give her an iPod with a Japanese language guide on it. WorldNomads.com have one as do others. Harajuku on a Sunday is a hoot for anyone of any age ... I hope she likes crowds! over 11 years ago

Tokyo is a wonderfully mad and crazy place to visit. If your daughter is going to wander around on her own while you're busy with work there are a few things I would recommend (as an Australian living in Japan):

    1. Learn a few survival phrases: words like "hello" (konnichiwa) and "sorry!" (sumimasen). Lonely Planet's Japanese language pocket book is a permanent fixture in my handbag.

    2. Learn how to use the subway: you can't avoid the subway while in Tokyo. The easiest thing to do would be to print out a subway/JR train map in advance (http://www.jref.com/practical/transportation_tokyo.shtml). Also, there are English guides on how to use the ticket machines (http://www.metacafe.com/watch/516467/japan_how_to_buy_a_train_ticket_from_the_ticket_machine/).

    3. Work out what you'd like to do while you're in Tokyo: there are so many things to see and do in Tokyo. A great site to check out is japan-guide.com, which gives recommendations and info on how to get to places.

Hope this helps! Feel free to PM me if you'd like more info as I just spent a few days in Tokyo with my parents last week who were visiting from Australia. Have a nice time in Japan! over 11 years ago
