I don't mind paying a little bit more if they are really nice.

Has anyone got suggestions on good places to go?

Kyoto-Kimono Plaza, Kyoto is one of Kyoto’s more approachable kimono shops. because the quality is high it's nit cheap but you can be measured for a custom kimono and the shop will post it to your home.

Alternatively, try the Kōbō-san flea market at Tō-ji on the 21st of each month where you can find used kimono. over 10 years ago

Personally Id go for the second hand and antique shops around the Yasaka shrine, very cheap and real kimonos. However, as Simon makes the point above, they may not fit you, so really depends on what you're looking for. over 10 years ago

I highly recommend the Toji market Simon suggested. Lots of ladies sell their last season Kimono there, many are still really nice. There are also a few crafts-people that hand-die their own and sell there as well. Prices range from a measly Y500 to A LOT. I love that market! about 10 years ago
