So this is not so much about Tokyo in particular, but rather some general ideas about good value food we discovered in Japan.

Our target was something around the 500-800 yen mark.

Some great places we found to hunt cheap food were:

Convenience stores - they often have pretty good bento and onigiri.

The basement levels of the department stores often have very large food markets loaded with bento, pastries, tempura yummies, salads, juices.

If you find some small bars, wander in behind the curtains because they usually have great bar food ... tempura, grilled meats etc...

We also found that supermarkets discount their fresh food in the evening so it can be a great place to get some bargains. about 6 years ago

The most recommended places to eat in Tokyo seems to be the "izakaya". As Philip says in his travel tips "head straight for the izakaya" (https://www.languagewire.com/en/lw/14/travel-tips/tokyo#Where-to-Eat) almost 6 years ago

If you love seafood, go to fish market in Tokyo. The outside shops sell the most tasty seafood. almost 6 years ago
