I am thinking of the following itinerary.
    Tokyo : 4 nights,
    Tokyo to Takayama by train
    Takayama:, 2 nights
    Takayama to Kyoto by train
    Kyoto : 4 nights.
Kyoto back to Tokyo : last night in Tokyo.
We would like to spend a day in Kanazawa. Is there a possible adjustment to the above schedule to make it happen? would appreciate some answers. thanks!! almost 7 years ago

Bypass Tokyo (I'm perhaps biased as I once lived there) but I'm here now exploring by Shinkansen and reckon rest of Japan has far more to offer.

Shinkansen to Kyoto. Minimum of 3 nights. Explore philosophers walk and Arashiyama. My fav temple is Gio-ji if you get that far.

Shinkansen to Okayama and local train to matsuyama on Shikoku. You've got to love Onsen like in the movie spirited away.

Shinkansen to Hiroshima then local train to Miyajima and ferry across to Miyajima island for a night.

I could suggest you head north to Kanazawa, great ninja temple among other sights - loved this place.

Perhaps then finish with a few nights of insanity in Tokyo. Once you've been elsewhere, you'll see how mad it is. almost 7 years ago

We really enjoyed the Snow Monkeys near Nagano (stayed at 1166 Backpackers Hostel in Nagano).

If you do a tour of one of their castles, since they're wood you'll have to wear a one-size-only slipper instead of your boots. Wear very warm socks, as there's no insulation. Maybe two pairs... almost 7 years ago
