Due to the recent nuclear leak is it still safe to travel to TOkyo, Mr Fuji, Osaka, Hokkaido in Dec 2013?
Already bought tickets to Japan. Will be a honeymoon trip travelling via train to Osaka, Mt FUji, Hokkaido and back to Tokyo. I heard it is unsafe as it might affect those who intend to have children. Pls advise so that I can plan for an alternative with my to-be. Thanks in advance.

Hi, if by "recent nuclear leaks" you mean the revelations that contaminated water has leaked out of one or more storage tanks on the site of the de-commissioned power plant at Fukushima - then you don't have to be worried. Where you're going is many, many, many times outside the area of concern.
To save space I won't go into detail here, but please read this article which details a scientific study which said the radiation exposure to most people in Fukushima prefecture (but not those in the plant environs) was equivalent to an x-ray: http://safety.worldnomads.com/japan-radiation-study
The thing to remember about radiation is it's bad if you're exposed to a lot for a short time, or to a little for a long time. If you're exposed to any radiation at all on your trip, it'll be very little for a very short time.
Don't worry.

Yes it is safe to travel to the destinations you mentioned. You more likely to experience more radiation on your plane flight than on your trip around Japan. about 6 years ago
