I'm planning to head to Shikoku on September 1, 2010 with the hope of finding some waves. I'd like to rent a car or a van for about 5 days. Are there many hire places around in that area? Will it be expensive? I'm happy to hire a vehicle in Osaka and drive down, if that's necessary.
I want to rent a car for the purpose of exploring the island and finding waves, as well as having somewhere to lock up my camera and other belongings while I surf.

Taking into consideration the cost + hassle of driving in Japan (can you read Japanese road signs and are you familiar with the laws/aggressive Japanese driving habits?) it woudl be better to rely on public transport, which is higly efficient. That said, yes, rental cars/vans are available but I believe you're looking at US$80 a day or so, plus gas $1.50 per liter, and road tolls/parking fees. If cost is no problem and crazy drivers do not bother you, go for it! :-) over 10 years ago

One thing to be wary of in Japan are road tolls. I think some of them can be as high as $50...! Google this though, I could be completely wrong ;) over 10 years ago
