I visited Japan for two weeks last winter and my stepdaughter has been there studying for a year. Me and my wife visited Tokyo, Hakone, Takayama, Kanazawa, Kyoto, Hiroshima and Miyajima and every hotel and ryokan we stayed at felt very, very safe. Japan must be the country i have visited that felt the most safe and the people were the most helpful and polite people i have ever encountered. I don't remember the names of any hotel or ryokan but if you are staying for six nights a trip to and an overnight stay at a ryokan in Hakone is a great way to know the japanese guesthouses, hospitality and food. almost 9 years ago

I haven't stayed here but it sounds an authentic Japanese experience: http://www.ivebeenthere.co.uk/tips/30963

Another suggestion: take the train 90 minutes from Tokyo to Kamakura. If you can't get to Kyoto this is the next best thing. A fantastic day trip. almost 9 years ago
