My recommendation is Dorsoduro. Main reasons: It is not overcorwded with tourists. San Marco is totally crazy. There are few interesting museums there: Accademia Peggy Guggenheim, Punta della Dogana. There is more real life of the city. Area also has some nice hotels ( not as much as San Marco but there are few quite interesting hotels). Personally I love peace and quite of this sestiere and it is very good connected with rest of Venice just cross Accademia bridge. You can see more information here. http://www.traveltovenezia.com/dorsoduro-venice-district-dorsoduro-sestiere/

There is also good overview on few other sites like Reids Italy etc. about 5 years ago

Venice is crowded and expensive but also unique, beautiful and worth every penny. However, if you want to save some cash do not stay in a hotel on the lagoon. Choose a cheaper option on the mainland in Mestre. The connection to Venice proper is a 10minute rail ride and the service is excellent all day and all night long. over 4 years ago
