    It used to be but when we were there last year, the hotel just photocopied them. You need your passport for identity. Make sure you take a copy with you. almost 5 years ago

    They have to register your passport data & transmit it to the police. So, they can kept it for a while... but not more one day!!
    I am italian and every time i go to an Italian hotel i ask to have my national id card back in an hour. almost 5 years ago

    It's very common for hotels to do that in Europe. It's probably a good thing though because it means you won't lose it. almost 5 years ago

    Holding it for 1 day in the hotel is common in smaller places. Large cities photocopy it and give it back quickly almost 5 years ago
