I'm driving from Cinque Terre to Rome and would like to stop in 2 or 3 pintoresque towns while I pass through Tuscany. Thanks!

Well, you shouldn't miss Sienna. And while san gimignano can we over-run with tour busses by day, we actually stayed in the town and at night it was nigh deserted and empty and delightful.

We also hired a Vespa and toured Tuscan and many of the tiny tiny towns and villages that aren't particularly well known nor have anything to 'see' are a delight.

Barga is a lovely medieval town that isn't taking you too far out of your way. Lucca is also really interesting. about 5 years ago

Monteriggioni is a medieval village with ancient Castle between Siena and Val d'Elsa.Monteriggioni is also on the route of the famous Via Francigena. I suggest a stop in Monteriggioni town and also if you are looking for an accommodation i can suggest Relais la Costa http://www.relaislacosta.it/en about 5 years ago

We drove that same drive three years ago. We visited the medieval town of Pitigliano east of Grosseto. It was amazing! about 5 years ago

Don't miss San Gimignano, definitely. And there you can stay at Casolare Le Terre Rosse http://www.hotelterrerosse.com in a typical ancient Tuscan farm. about 5 years ago

I don't know how much time you want to spend in every place but I suggest you should stay in a place easy to be reached, from which you can decide to visit even the countryside. Poggibonsi is a small town half way between Florence and Siena, just exiting the highway 'Autopalio'. San Gimignano is 10 minutes away, but from Poggibonsi you can even visit Castellina in Chianti e Radda in Chianti, or even go to Volterra (30 minutes). Here you can stay at Hotel Alcide. Clean, affordable and great fish cuisine in the restaurant. Have a nice trip http://www.hotelalcide.com/ about 5 years ago

I have a contact in the middle of the tuscan mountains... you could stay there for free in exchange for a few hours of work a day...just write me a private message if you are interested and I can ask him if he currently needs somebody.
