Just wondering if anyone out there has done Italy in a hired motor home or even on Vespas staying in caravan/ camp grounds.
Wanting to travel around Italy at our own pace, stopping where we want to, just not sure about availability of camping or caravan park facilities, love to hear others experiences and wether this would actually save you much money.

I have never done it but fuel prices for a camper could be an issue. Regular gas in Europe runs around $9 a gallon. almost 8 years ago

Apologies, i don't approve of "doing" places, but i have travelled all over Europe in a Motor home or camping car as they are called there, including 3 months in Italy. It is an incredibly popular way to get about for the locals. The campgrounds are cheap and plentiful. My favourite is Michelangelo in Florence. We also slept on mountain hillsides, forest tracks, etc, and woke to fabulous views and all for free. There are some good books on all this online. Re Vespas, many campgrounds have cabins attached, very cheap and quite comfy. It is also a great way to meet Europeans. Diesel is almost always cheaper than petrol across Europe and is more fuel efficient. Camper vans can be easily hired in Europe. Get a GPS. Get off the motorways and explore. Best of luck, bp almost 8 years ago
