There are lots of narrow alley ways, didn't know if wandering around San Marco was a good idea or not.

Thanks,
Liza

Yes it is. And you must do it to enjoy the essence of this unique water-city over 5 years ago

We had no problems. You must go to San Marco square in the evening as well as the day. There is music (Quartets were playing in 4 parts of the square in summer), lots of people, beautiful and fun. over 5 years ago

Yes it is (with the usual caveat's about wallets and valuables being kept secure). Real estate on the main island is so valuable in tourism terms that most people live on the other islands or mainland.... but there "local" areas to explore. I had a wonderful experience wandering in a residential area a few years ago.... it was close to the site of the Biennale, I think it was Via Guissepe Garibaldi and surrounding streets. over 5 years ago

Yes it is!! You miss too much of the "real" Venice if you don't walk the back ways. We stayed in a convent on the Murano side in a beautiful quaint residential area and gained so much!! Just be prudent like would anywhere. over 5 years ago
