My son was in Rome last summer, LOTS of vendors, he said the best was the, Vatican no vendors allowed! Amazing things to see! As an 17 year old I was in awe of his pictures and retelling of his experience, wish I could have gone! The mid day he said wes busy so I would suggest either early or later in the day check with your hotel on there times, as with Holy days times may change! But as far as I am concerned if you are in Rome it is a must see! almost 6 years ago

Arriving at a museum right when they open is always a good way of beating crowds. When I was in Rome the craziest museum was the whole Vatican experience. It's pretty difficult to avoid crowds there, and I would highly recommend booking a tour in advance in order to skip the line. If y are planning on visiting a lot of museums you may want to consider a Roma Pass (romapass.it) this will allow you to skip the line at the first two sites you visit, as well as the line at the colosseum. almost 6 years ago

The Vatican museum is fabulous, but there is always a long line. You can prebook an entrance time on the website. Well worth it. almost 6 years ago

Using a tour guide for the Vatican will get you past a lot of the lines. Even if you arrive before opening, the line is really long. almost 6 years ago

Agree with others the Vatican can't be missed but book ahead. Try to avoid weekends in Rome, very crowded! We were there on a weekend in October this past year and it was almost overwhelming. But it is a fantastic city! almost 6 years ago
