I have used airbandb.com as well as vrbo.com (vacation rental by owner) and have been very happy. Tripping.com just recently launched a service for renting homes/flats that is an aggregation of a lot of other vacation rental places, so a good one-stop-shop of lots of other providers. There's also homeway.com

The other place I would look is Craigslist.org in the home rental section of the city area in Italy you are looking for (or just do a search on the main homepage) but note that is the individual home owners posting there with no 3rd party guarantees or assurance of who you are dealing with. over 7 years ago

A great company to consider is Rentavilla.com. They have been in the villa rental business a long time and have many choices in Italy. I know that they inspect their villas themselves and therefore have many choices to offer depending on what your needs are. Renting a villa is much cheaper than staying in a hotel and it allows you more space and the ability to cook instead of eating out for every meal.
