If you are landing in Rome, i suggest:
    Day 1) Rome
    Day 2) Rome
Day 3) Leave to Pisa and sleep there
Day 4) Leave to Florence and sleep there
Day 5) Leave to Venice and sleep there
    Day 6) Venice
Day 7) enjoy Bolonia on the way back to Rome
    Day 8) Rome and flight

It is FAR expensive to sleep in Venice. The suggest is to look for a good hotel at a good price in Mestre, in the mainland. From Mestre to Venice its 10 minutes by train or buses. Both travel every 10/15 minutes and are really cheap. about 9 years ago

Try an book your accommodation in advance, that way you know how much that will cost. Try to factor in high speed trains too, they are more expensive, but very much worth it, especially if traveling alone as you won't get hassled as much, also great on time. Not sure on cheap places to stay, do a google search on bed and breakfast in each area you go to. Hope this helps! about 9 years ago

Book your hostel in Italy through the official website of Italian Approved Hostels: http://www.aighostels.com/?lingua=_eng
Standards are monitored and you'll get value for money
    I suggest the following tour:

    1) Milan
    2) Bologna
    3) Florence
    4) Pisa
    5) Siena
    6) Roma
    7) Roma
    back to Milan

Travel by train and book in advance a "mini" tariff : http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=38a304ae4f9ec210VgnVCM1000003f16f90aRCRD
