By "the north" I assume you mean the Kurdish autonomous region, the KGR? In that case it seems you'll be relatively safe. The Kurdish region has been protected by a no-fly zone since the first Gulf war in 1991. Many articles refer to the region as the place where "the US won the Gulf War". They Kurds have been busy building an economy rather than repairing war damage.
I've had a through search of news items from KGR and can't see mention of anything that would cause you too much worry, but it is a tense region, and the Kurds are involved in politics in Iraq, Turkey and Iran - a volatile mix.
Make sure you don't cross into Iraq proper - a world of pain awaits you there.
Small problem - most governments don't see the KGR as separate from Iraq and many (including your own) have issued DO NOT TRAVEL warnings. This means it's very unlikely you'll be covered by your travel insurance for that part of the trip (you're going against the advice of your government).
Which is a pity, because the KGR has just opened a new multi-million dollar international airport terminal, and are trying to boost tourism in their region. about 10 years ago

It's all relative. One of the largest bombs in Iraq took place in Erbil. so though it is generally considered safer that southern Iraq, you just never know. Also, there are other parts of Kurdistan that are under attack by Turkey. Go with experienced security escort that is very familiar with moving around this area and making all neccesary arrangements to ensure a good, safe trip.

Iraqi Kurdistan is in Northern Iraq and the south of Kurdistan. It is a very safe area. If you want to travel to northern Iraq it is very safe compared to other parts of Iraq. Book a flight to Erbil Intenational Airport. Erbil is the fourth largest city in Iraq and the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan. Catch a taxi to a place you want to go. Best places in Iraqi Kurdistan are Erbil, Duhok and Sulaimaniyah. I highly recommend going to Duhok, a beautiful city nestled inside tall mountain ranges. You would probably need a little bit of knowlede of the Kurdish language. almost 8 years ago
