While the rest of Iraq has been riven by war and conflict, the northern Kurdish zone has been protected by an allied no-fly zone since 1991. Billions of dollars have been spent on war in the rest of Iraq, but in the Kurdish north they've been building a society. They have a multi-million dollar airport and daily flights from places like Dubai. There's been no war or significant conflict since 1991. It's a little known anomaly of Iraq, a safe (and prosperous place. Sadly though, because travel insurance policies are based on nations, you will find it near impossible to get regular travel insurance for Erbil, you'll need specialist cover. Personally, I' also be seeking assurances from the employer/contractor about my safety (and a quick get out clause if it's not to my liking safety-wise). From what I hear, it's an amazing place. Just don't set one foot outside the protected zone. almost 9 years ago
