I will be in Jakarta for a week, but have a weekend to spare. I would like to get out of the city to visit "Indonesia" I am an avid outdoor/travel/people photographer. I need recommendations for day trips outside of the city.

You could go to "puncak" area. It is a highland about 2 hours trip from Jakarta, depends on the traffic. Try the tea plantation walk tour, you should have several interesting objects to photograph, along with several waterfalls. Of course, on weekends the traffic could be pretty crazy so consult a local for the typical traffic hours.

Bogor national park also offer beautiful green scenery. It is about 1-1.5 hours drive from jakarta.

Other choice would be to stay in town. "sunda kelapa" and "muara karang" harbor offer unique scenes of fishing boats and fishermen village.

Hi Ted, you can go for islands hopping and do some photo hunting, cultural and historical trip and water sports activity. The island that people usually visit are tidung island, pramuka island, bira island, bidadari island. Those islands are part of Kepulauan Seribu area. It will takes few hour to cross from the muara karang harbour in north Jakarta, but the ambience is worth to visit.

Otherwise, you can also stay in Jakarta and visit old town area. There are plenty of museums and the area is pretty for photography activity.

Hope this helps, u may want to googling more on the kepulauan seribu for more references. Have fun! about 9 years ago

Hi Ted, if you like Volcanoes, you can go to Bandung, a city which is surrounding by mountain. You can visit Kawah Putih (white crater)at southern Bandung and also the famous Tangkuban Parahu mountain, you can do a bit hiking going down to the crater. After tired of walking, you can stay and relax by enjoying the hot spring in hotel near Tangkuban Perahu. You can go to Bandung (130 km from Jakarta) by public transportation, which cost you around 70.000 IDR (10 USD) one way. Rent car in Bandung a day with driver around 350.000-500.000 IDR/day, depend on negotiation. Bandung also famous for factory outlet. about 9 years ago

Defo go to Bandung for day trips. Do go really early on Sat and return late night to avoid massive traffic on both routes. Many things to do in the city where the past colonial Dutch used to call the Paris of Java. Nice colonial architecture, good weather, nice mountains (active volcanoes!), and most importantly, great food! I'd hire a personal driver to travel tho. Better to pay a little more for local knowledge and safety. about 9 years ago

For outdoor and nature visit, Pulau Seribu (Thousand Island) is the best choice. It offers great visibility sea for snorkeling & diving.
For a blend with people and culture of Indonesia, you can pick Bandung as your destination. Try to spend 1 night at Lembang and 1 night at Bandung, but I strongly suggest not to stay there during weekends since people from Jakarta will make traffic jams in Bandung.
For a shorter trip, go to Bogor/Puncak instead. Puncak offers good atmosphere, while Bogor offers fresh air as well as culinary experience (Chinese food, Sundanese food, and Western Food). about 8 years ago
