Is it generally safe to travel to Surabaya in Indonesia? What is the best way to get around? Are taxis safe?

Yes it is generally safe (the greatest danger - as always - is being injured in a vehicle accident, but that's as true of Surabaya as it is of New York).
Some western governments - such as Australia - are critical of the threat of terrorist attack in Indonesia (and rightly so, because their citizens are the ones who get targeted) and east Java seems to be the place where the radical groups are based. The latest assessment from crisis management groups is that the mass-killing style of attack (ie Bali bombing) is being replaced with "individual jihad" aimed at local targets such as police or Christian groups.
The chances of you being coincidentally caught up in one of those attacks is extremely remote. over 9 years ago -
Hi, it is quite safe to travel to Surabaya. It's one of the big city in Java island. There are many taxis company, but I suggest to take Blue Bird taxi. Fare is based on km. over 9 years ago

There's plenty ways to get around In Surabaya, though i suggest taking taxi as the other public transportation might be a little bit to confusing at first especially for foreigners. over 9 years ago
