An International driving PERMIT (it's not a license) will cover you for vehicle tytpes you are permitted to drive/ride at home. So, if you have a valid motorcycle license in your home country in MOST places (including Bali) and an international poermit you'll be okay.
An international permit DOES NOT authorise you to ride a class of vehicle that you're not licensed for at home.
And then there are insurance implications too. Read more about this topic here:

I know you won't feel like it, but please wear some kind of protective clothing (a sarong and flip-flops are NOT safety clothing).

Michelle, Phil is 100 % correct about what he says. You will not have any problems hiring anything in Bali ! but if you have an accident regardless of whose fault it is you will be in the wrong unless you have a bike license and an international permit. The biggest profit for the bike renters is when you have a problem :)

My take is don't worry too much about license or permit or what have you when you are in Indonesia. The only sure-fire thing that WILL get you out of trouble (if you are unfortunate) is to carry lots of 50,000 rupiah notes (50,000 rupiah is approx. SGD$10.00) This denomination has magic. Anything less and the authorities will smile at you sarcastically and will try to make it difficult for you like asking for your passport or whatever documents you have and if you naively hand them over, you are in deep trouble. Just simply hand over a 50,000 rupiah note and they will let you off as if nothing happened. about 7 years ago
