Backpacking with my Mum for a couple of weeks through Bali and Java, planning to visit Sanur, Ubud, Yogyakarta, Borobodur and Jakarta.

Can anyone recommend places they liked or things they did in/near these places? And any good places to stay? Food, activities, walks, markets, bars, music - anything! Any random advice is greatly appreciated!

    Hi Kate,

Definitely get to Ubud, it's a beautiful part of Bali with some stunning guest houses, markets and cultural activities such as the Neka Art Museum and the Seniwati Gallery which focuses on female artists. Sacred Monkey forest is a bit of a standard tourist spot, but still worth the walk down from town. On the safety side, keep a wide birth from the monkeys and stray dogs for that matter as there has been an increase in rabies cases in Bali - http://ht.ly/3VQAv. almost 10 years ago

I agree with Christopher, Ubud is a wonderful part of Bali, there are many things to see and do, if you want really want to get into the culture you should go to the Gianyar night market - a great way to experience life among the locals and taste Indonesian cuisine.

A great place to see is the famous floating temple on lake Bratan (also known as the Ulun Danu Temple). It is in Bedugul, located about 50 km north of Denpasar on a main route from South Bali to North Bali.

If you can, head over to the northern part of Bali, the seaside town of Lovina is beautiful and there are a lot of shops and sights to see. If you continue travelling along the coast to the north-west, you will find another small town called Banyupoh, from this area you can catch a boat to go snorkelling at Palau Menjangan (about a 20min boat ride from the mainland). This island has the most fabulous coral reefs I have ever seen - if I had one reason to go back to Bali, that would be to go snorkelling at this reef again, absolutely stunning!

If you want to know more general info about Bali, you can have a look at my travel journal of my trip to Bali last year. There is also this website that I found useful: http://www.indonesia-tourism.com/index.html almost 10 years ago

Great, now I get to be the bad guy! Phil here from the safety hub. Bali IS amazing, but there're a couple of safety issues to be aware of.... Dengue Fever, especially if you're going to rural villages. And Rabies, there's a massive cull/innoculation program underway because about 80 people (all locals) have died in the past couple of years. The rabies post-exposure vaccine is in very short supply on the island (often there isn't any available - which means a trip to Darwin, or Singapore). Don't pet the dogs and watch out for the monkeys.
But Bali really is great.... really! almost 10 years ago

    im from indonesia myself !
for food.. you HAVE to try Babi Guling (suckling pigs) from Ibu Oka and Nuri's Naughty Ribs (both in Ubud)..

Seminyak has got a nice selection of shopping from local designers. Price is not cheap though, but it's worth looking at.

I hope you'll enjoy bali :) almost 10 years ago
