    I went with an Indosat "Matrix" sim while i was there, it cost 20,000rp and came with 200 free SMS, 25MB of data and 2,500rp worth of calls, I also bought a 40,000rp top up just in case I burnt through the data (google maps et al).

    They don't automatically configure the phone with an "APN" (access point name) automatically, this is required for data and mms services - very straightforward to find on their site : http://3g.indosat.com/about/FAQ.php

    This can be found at Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network on an iPhone and probably in the configuration settings of other phone.

    APN = indosatgprs
    Username = indosat
    Password = indosat

    I did find that my phone jumped alot between 3G, Edge, and GPRS a fair bit depending on coverage. Not blazing fast, but works and was much cheaper than global roaming. almost 10 years ago
