We will be backpacking for 2 months (Thailand mainly). Probably fly from Phuket to Surabaya and was wondering if anyone knew a cheap route to get to Ijen crater? Via train to Bandowoso or Banyuwangi?

I went from Banyuwangi (there is a train from Surabaya) and stayed at Ritansa Roebuck, it was easy to go to Ijen from there, they arranged to drive me up with just a day of notice. They also offer either the midnight hike (to see blue fire) or the early morning hike. I did the early morning hike and it was incredible. over 6 years ago

There is train from Surabaya to Banyuwangi. You can stop at KarangAsem station. From there you can go to sulfur factory by public transport or motorcycle taxi (ojek). You can then go to Ijen by sulfur factory's truck. Or, you can go directly to ijen by the ojek, about 30 km from karangasem. No need hotel, take a rest in paltuding Ijen since you have to climb at midnight to see bluefire. over 6 years ago
