i am travelling to bali in may, i have about 12 days and would like to make most of it. doing all i can, but i dont know how many days to stay in an area. any advise will be welcome. i am not so into night life/clubbing. hope to hear from someone soonish!x
Hi Herculine, 12 days is perfect to see some of the highlights Bali and Lombok have to offer.
My reccomendations are:
A day in Seminyak on arrival then head to Sanur and catch the fast ferry to the Gillis. I avoid Gilli Trewanagan. I love Gilli Air, it's more rustic.
Spend 3 days there.
Go to Lombok mainland, maybe a day in Sengiggi but not essential. Hire a driver to take you south the Kuta- spend a day here,
Head back to Gillis and fast boat to Nusa Lembongan or Nusa Penida. 2 days there.
Head back to Bali- spend 2 days in Ubud.
Last 2 days either in Pemuteran (north west) or Balian or Canggu.
You can hire a car for $12 per day and drive around the island, very easy.
On my most recent trip in March, we did this and booked last minute accommodation daily through www.agoda.com it was so stress-free.
I also find the best plans are the ones you don't have. Bali is pretty easy to just get around without any firm itinerary, you'll meet people along the way who can give you real time reccomendations.

I think 12 days will be ok - you probably want to stay longer when it's time to leave, but in 12 days you will have time to get around the island:)
Another idea for an itinerary could be this one:

12 days isn't very long as these two islands have a great deal to offer and reward those with patience. We've been back many times.
If its your first visit, I'd suggest base yourself in Ubud for at least 4 days -Ubud itself has become a tourist hub but it remains the cultural hub of the island and there is loads to do, see and experience in and particularly around.
Then hire a driver for a day and drive slooooowly to Padangbai in the east skirting the foot of the volcano through villages and rice paddies. It's a spectacular drives. Padangbai and the east is also worth at least a few days but it's also the point of ferry departure to Lombok.
Lombok is extraordinarily different to Bali and a delight to explore too. Gili islands off the north leave me underwhelmed personally but many people do enjoy them.
Search for Bali on here and you'll find loads of tips for places to stay or temples to visit.
