Can anyone recommend a beautiful boutique place to stay in Lombok for 5 days? We have a 2 year old with us, so need some rest as well. Can you also recommend some things to do while we are there?

Years ago we stayed at the Santai Beach Inn (http://www.santaibeachinn.com/) long before this region was developed and it was quite the secluded corner.

These days there has been quite a bit of development, much not very good. Last time we stayed here http://www.quncivillas.com/hotel/opening.html which was by far the nicest place in that area, far better than other big names nearby.

Nice local people nearby too. http://journals.worldnomads.com/simon_monk/country/100.aspx

We have previously stayed in some of the villages in the centre of the island too, but unfortunately I forget their names.

It's been quite a longtime since my last visit to Lombok so I'm sure things have changed a lot. When I was there I stayed in both the Oberoi and Novotel - both of which were very nice. However, if you want a bit of 'local flavor' then head to the east coast where there are a number of fishing villages (mostly Muslim) and there are cheap guesthouses. about 10 years ago

What a shame I was not a member of this forum before!
My pick if you are heading south in Lombok to Kuta is a lovely family owned homestay called Mimpimanis. I stayed there for 5 days in Nov 2006 and had a fab time.
Gemma an English woman and her Balinese husband Made own Mimpimanis.
Check out the website as Gemma has a forum on Lombok called Lombok Lovers she created years ago.
And just recently I found out from Gemma that the immigration office in Mataram Lombok issues extensions on 30 day or 60 day visas with great ease.
