Mmm, yes ... but it's definitely worth the effort to get to Sumbawa, Flores and Sumba and we had some wonderful adventures in those islands, but probably not with a two year old!

Remarkably you can still get off the beaten track even in Bali: we hired a motorbike on our last trip there and were astonished that you only had to go one valley across from Ubud and almost all the tourists disappeared. Delightful. An option we did a couple of years ago with a 1 year old and a 3 year old in tow was to hire a taxi and spend a day following the base of the volcano from Ubud across to the East coast - wonderful scenery. If we were doing it again I'd now stay on the east coast too for a few days, probably at Padambai.

Lombok is also easy and accessilble and fun with a 2 year old. Same deal: hire a taxi for the day to take you around and inland. over 9 years ago
