I stayed at the Hotel Jayakarta a while back though it may be too upmarket & glamorous for you but it wasn't expensive. Got a great deal on a discount hotel site online. It's in the Sengiggi area but not in the town so ideally ones own transport might be preferable if you want to explore. It's right on the beach & is gorgeous with a huge swimming pool, beautiful rooms, grounds, communal area & sumptuous food. If only I could have spent longer there. It is not high rise. Here's some links:

Alternatively you might like to look into homestay accomodation, it might be more your scene. A couple from the boat trip I did beforehand did that. They found it online so perhaps if you google it something suitable might come up. almost 7 years ago

Try Santai Beach Inn - we stayed there a long time ago, but it was still there last year and is one of the originals. Recommended. almost 7 years ago

If you really want to get away from it all, and not wanting to stay in Mataram or Kuta - I would highly recomend going to the Gillis. Gilli Air has a lovely little hotel http://www.hotelgiliair.com/ almost 7 years ago

Agree with the Santai recommendation but now called Puri Mas. But now the new airport is open and much further. Some serious security issues in Lombok with locals and the roads at night. I have heard reports of robberies stopping cars. almost 7 years ago

Hi Carole, you better go straight to Gili.you will need to take speed boat for about 15 minutes fromSenggigi to Gili. There are a lot of Gili, but the 3 most famous are gili trawangan, gili meno and gili air. Those gilis have great water sports spots, u can explore for snorkeling and swimming. U can try villa ombak in gili trawangan, its not expensive but probably u will find it too glamorous, but i would suggest you googling for villa ombak to find whether u will like the place or not. Good luck! almost 7 years ago

Well if you want the Gilis, the Beachhouse on Gili Trawangen has budget accommodation called the Snapper Bungalows near the beach but not on it. Believe me if you want cheap & unglamorous this is it & the advantage, if you want it, is that you're away from the noise of the weekly rave parties at Tir na nÓg. You get your breakfast in the connected Fish & Chip cafe which is situated infront of the bungalows & you have use of the swimming pool at the Beach House which is about a 10-15 minute walk up the main traverse.

Gili Trawangen is very touristy & IMHO very much a young persons destination. If you go there try to fit in a horse & cart trip to see the rest of the arid island. Try also to stop off at the Monkey Forest on the way to feed the naughty monkeys, who wait at the roadside, with bananas & maybe some nuts, they are tamer than the cute critters in Ubud, Bali. On the boat trip to the Gilis you'll be in for a speedboat trip & a half. :) Also be careful taking malaria medication, I got as sick as a dog taking malarone & it marred alot of my vacation. It also destroyed my appetite so I couldn't sample much of the culinary delights of the Gilis including the seafood. Be careful also where & what you eat & if you get food poisoning, DON'T take any local remedies because a young Irish woman died recently from doing this. almost 7 years ago
