There are well prices flights into Tiruchirappalli. Is this town/region good to visit and also is there a good train to Kerala region - and how long would this train take? We are interested in going on a houseboat in Kerala region. Thank you!

We were there over Christmas and yes there is a train right up the coast. Tickets are pretty random though and can get booked up weeks ahead in busy seasons so be prepared. (having said that, having been told the train was full for more than an hour at a ticket office in Panaji, I eventually managed to prize tickets out of them. Then, when we turned up, the train up to Mumbai was almost empty for the entire journey!)

Best places to get houseboats from is Alleppey, which is a pretty place to stay for a few days anyway. But rather than a houseboat, the ferry to Kottayam is a great way to get the same scenery and meet the locals too.

Agree with simonmonk - best places for houseboat rentals is Alleppey. We did a two day/one night trip in September and that was long enough for us. Its extremely pretty and well worth going but I personally wouldnt want to go for longer than a few days.

We combined our houseboat, with a few days at http://www.beachatpollethai.com/ which is about 45 minutes from Alleppey and then stayed at their sister hotel in Kochin (The Old Courtyard) before catching our flight out. over 11 years ago

Give these guys http://www.paradisaretreat.com/ a call. They are very helpful and may organise things like a houseboat for you. over 11 years ago
