Canon. If you're new to the entire DSLR thing, I suggest you get an entry level camera like the 1100D, 500D, 550D, 600D

For the prices, you can check this site out, just hover on the camera models and the prices will pop out:

Hey aren’t you thinking about Sony Alpha camera? I think they have some very impressive cameras like A55 and A 35. I would think about them because they work faster than other bards that you have mentioned because they use the mirrorless translucent technology. Do check at Sony website, in fact the A35 was launched in India just few days ago. Im also keen on buying alpha camera, hence I keep checking their website. The differences between Canon and Nikon are so minute, even if you're not starting out, it all comes down to how much you like the brand name. I'm a Canon guy but others swear by Nikon, as far as I'm concerned for no real good reason.

Personally I agree with the previous poster: the Canon T2i or T3i (D550, D600) are what you want. Great, compact, totally versatile travel cameras. Great bang/buck quotient. Have traveled w/ my T2i for 2 years now and would never switch. about 7 years ago
