We advise against all travel to or through rural areas of Jammu and Kashmir, other than to Ladakh, and against all but essential travel to Srinagar. If you intend to travel to Srinagar then you should only travel there by air, and you should check the local security situation before doing so. Despite an overall decline in violence in Jammu and Kashmir in recent years, there is a high risk of unpredictable violence, including bombings, grenade attacks, shootings and kidnapping. In some border areas there is the danger of land mines. There is also a risk of kidnapping. over 8 years ago

It is a strange place with a high level of tension. I was there in 2005 for 6 weeks. Either end of my trip there was some carnage and deaths. Very sad, as it is a remarkable place. over 8 years ago

I travelled Kashmir Many times in last 3 years and I feel it is as safe. The peoples there are very polite and helpful. First time when I traveled to Srinagar I was also little worried but all goes well.

This is what Australia's DFAT says (September 2013): "We advise you to exercise a high degree of caution in the Ladakh region of the state of Jammu and Kashmir and to reconsider your need to travel to the cities of Jammu and Srinagar (including the Jammu-Srinagar highway). We advise you not to travel to other parts of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, due to frequent armed clashes, terrorist activities and violent demonstrations."
I have no evidence to suggest this warning is unwarranted. about 6 years ago -
Yes, it's absolutely safe to visit. Summer vacations are on the head, many tourist plans visit in Srinagar from India and the World. It is situated perfectly in the heart of the beautiful Kashmir Valley. almost 6 years ago
