I'd go to Mahaballipuram just outside Chennai. Its a 2000 year old historical site. Quite a lot of history there. There are some nice beaches along the way. The Art Gallery and Fort St. George (I think the first British settlement in India) are also a must visit. Marina Beach in Chennai is the longest urban beach in the world. Meenakshi Temple in Mylapore if you are into temples. If you are in Chennai you have got to go to a saree shop - no better place to do that than T Nagar. If you acquire a taste for Indian Sweets - go to Grand Sweets & Snacks in Adyar. For great South Indian food go to Saravana Bhavan anywhere you can find one.
And if you have time, you should visit Pondicherry, this is an old french settlement a couple of hours from chennai over 9 years ago
Kanyakumari is popular for its Hindu pilgrimage site tourist places in Tamilnadu. Kanyakumari is surrounded by sea on three sides. The tourists who visit this southernmost tip of India would certainly enjoy the exuberant scenes of the sunsets, the sunrises especially on full moon days. The nature of the sand in the beaches of Kanyakumari is unique as it is multicolored. Kanyakumari Tourist Places has a never ending list starting from the famous Thiruvalluvar statue to the Vivekananda rock memorial. If you are planning to visit Kanyakumari in coming vacation then I would say that you have chosen a wonderful destination for vacation.
