We're in Kerala beg Feb '14 to mid march '14 and are looking at spending about 15 - 20 AUD per night for accommodation. Is it better to book before we go or just wait until we get there. We'll be Cochin and surrounds. Any other advice most welcome!

Kochi, Trivandrum are amazing but do have a look at Wayanad, expecially Vythri village. Plus if you are looking for budget accommodation that no need to book in advance. Just reach there check some local online sites - makemytrip, ibibo, etc.

Check out some nice travel guides for kerala. That will be really helpful. Like lonely planet, national geographic.

Yes it is better you book some of the hotels you'll be staying at, because February is one of the preferred seasons for visiting Kerala. There is also a Kerala Village Fair that's organized in the first week of Feb. You should at least pre-book a hotel for your February stay, and can look for others while you are there. And not just rates, you get better rooms at the same rate if you book beforehand. (Like often, the rooms with better views get filled first).

Apart from Cochin, you should try Alleppey and Kovalam (if you're a beach person), Munnar (for its tea estates and hills), Thekaddy (for its greenery and wildlife). Check out this wide range of packages:
