Does anyone have details about pricing and booking for the train service from New Dehli to Agra? Is it possible to pre-book online? Cheers

This is the Indian Governments train booking web site. http://www.indianrail.gov.in for all timetables and rules with online bookings done here: http://www.irctc.co.in. There is also a great page on Seat61 about Indian Trains: http://www.seat61.com/India.htm

However, I have always found getting train tickets in India to be a most peculiar experience: you queue up, they tell you the trains are all full, you ask about other dates (which are also full), then you keep trying and eventually they discover some seats available on the original train you asked about. So you take this train and it's half empty.

Delhi to Agra is dead easy. Top tip: if you are up that way head across to Varanasi! almost 11 years ago

The BEST and most efficient way to get around the train hassles in India, is to use cleartrip.com. It is the by far the best tip we got. As long as your credit card is hooked up to online shopping it is a piece of cake! It only charges (on top of credit card fees which isn't much) 20Rs cleartrip fee - rather than maybe 100Rs per person with an agent. And this way if anything doesn't go to plan you can cancel your ticket and get pretty much all money but a small percentage back. Only thing is, you have to cancel at least 24hrs beforehand.

Tip: if you're doing a lot of train travel in India, you have to think about it in advance.

And when Agra is involved, don't be on a tight schedule. Many, many times trains are delayed both in and out of Agra. There is nothing exciting about this city apart from the obvious attraction, so it is not recommended to stay there, as there are many touts and you will have a higher chance than most places of getting ripped off if you're not careful. over 10 years ago

We rented a car from Delhi to Agra. It took about 4 hours (I think) to drive there, and, like all car rentals in India comes with a driver. We did Agra on a day trip, and it was nice to rent a car because then you got to choose what time you wanted to leave it. I'm not 100% sure on the price, but I remember it being relatively cheap - maybe 400 rupees each and there were 3 of us in the car? Don't quote me on that though. I'm not sure how we rented it, someone on our trip arranged that for us, but it's a much better option than those trains! over 9 years ago
