Its a little ways out but the golden temple in Amritsar is absolutely amazing. Go around 5 when they start the evening prayers. If you want to feel India, then go here. A truly beautiful experience to have in India. There is also a lot of history to see there. I.e Jallianwalla Bagh (it was the sight of a horriffic massacre that was so important in contributing to Gandhi's movement) and the old section of town is very cool although don't expect it to be super fancy it's a regular old neighborhood, but the government is working on restorations and starting up heritage tours. jelebi there is great. Also the waga border is very cool. When i went it turned into a giant dance party for everyone. Hope this helps, it's more off the beaten path than the golden triangle cities and not such a well established tourist city but it's gots some nice things to see in a weekend trip and it's only about 5 hrs by train for delhi. almost 6 years ago
