If I were a tourist I would go to where the Hungarian's eat! The Great Market Hall, or the Piac, located at the end of Liberty bridge, at the South end of Vaci Utca, upstairs is a row of food stalls, all cheap and all fresh daily, offering traditional Hungarian Cuisine. There is also a cafeteria style restaurant, and the food is good but it is expensive.
I had cabbage rolls from a stall just last week, and a Langos, yummy, and for under 5 Euros all together! Now thats a deal!

If you want to spend a very traditional dinner or lunch in Budapest - besides of the buffets and the market food which is also really great - visit Macesz Huszár. I've had a dinner there last night and it was a timeless rich and tasty classic meal - goose - with rosé sprizer...
magical atmosphere, the food is so high quality...
I'd like to spend a dinner there like monthly. Monthly because the portion is so big that I would't dare to eat there weekly. Classic and totally worth it! Amen.
