The destination of choice in Guatemala for senior travelers is the colonial city of Antigua. I’m currently living in Guatemala so if you need any help contact me. marinakuperman@gmail.com about 10 years ago

regardless of your age Harry, Guatemala has a very high crime rate and tourists are often the target. Australia's foreign office has some specific information about places where you should take care: http://bit.ly/cUUetY
and the British advice is very specific too: http://bit.ly/NMdPa
That's a very bleak picture of the situation, but worth noting.

On the up side; the statistics say there's a 99.97% chance you'll have a crime free visit. Especially if you are cautious and use your "street smarts".
The capital, Guatemala City sounds like the least safe part of the country. Despite that an increased police presence and a focus on protecting tourists means Zones 1, 9 and 10 in Guate are pretty safe.
Elsewhere, I see Marina has recommended Antigua and it sounds like the pick of destinations.
You sound like the adventurous type, Harry, so I'm assuming you know what you're doing in these kinds of places, that you have plenty of travel experience. But you should be aware that just about everyone advises against travelling alone in Guatemala. Maybe you'll be able to blend in better traveling alone - if you know what you're doing. But I'd advise going with a group or with an escort the first time. Work out for yourself how safe it is. You could always go back for a second "solo" visit, armed with a better understanding of the risks. I'd love to hear your travel tales when you return. Phil about 10 years ago

Been there and done that. Stay on escorted tours, do not leave your hotel at night, Antigua is safe during the day and early evenings in tourist areas, do not go outside city unless you are on an escorted tour, to include the city park which overlooks the city. generally all escorted tours to the ruins etc are safe. over 9 years ago

I didn't experience any danger though I wouldn't recommend Guatemala City even as a transit point over 8 years ago

Although Guatemala does indeed have a high crime rate, it is too beautiful to miss. As long as you stick to organized travel plans with reputable agencies, you'll be fine. over 8 years ago

We visited there in December and never felt afraid. Always wore a money belt and took safety precautions. Stay out of GUATEMALA city. Antigua is great!! Don't drink or let the water get in your eyes! over 8 years ago
