Currently booked to stay 4 nights in Athens then hire car for road trip ending at Thessalonika- Then to Turkey for 1 week then back to Greece for 1 week total 4 weeks available to travel. How easy is it to get accommodation at reasonable rates just dropping in as we arrive after a days road travel at most Greek towns . (assume we are willing to travel over 5 days to get to Thessalonika via the highlighted place to visit.) Should we definitely book or "wing it" ? Any views would be appreciated. Thank you- John

I responded to your question on the Greek Islands so I'll offer by two cents worth here as well. It does depend on what period you'll be travelling but in general you can "wing it" and find reasonable accommodation when you arrive. From Athens to Thessaloniki it's an 8 hour drive more or less but you'll obviously be stopping in between. Beware of periods like feast days of special greek saints and Greek Easter or Christmas as usually Greeks go home to their "horio" or home town to be with family and therefore towns will be indundated with extra guest during this time. You can always book ahead the day before if you're concerned but again having lived in Greece for 3 years and having travelled the length and breadth of it I never encountered any major problems in finding accommodation. over 7 years ago
